  • Oct. 27, 2004: Jaffna education official dies in road accident
    Mr. Ponniah Venugopalavanithasan (53), Theevagam Zonal Director of Education in Jaffna district died on the spot Wednesday morning around 11.10 a.m. at Manthikai Therumoodi Madam along Jaffna Point Pedro road when a vehicle crashed into a house, Nelliyady Police said. The official, known to his friends and workers as Mr Venugopal, earlier served as Principal of Point Pedro Hartley College for few months, education sources said. (More)

  • May 08, 2004: Fire destroys computers worth Rs.4m at Hartley College
    Computer center Hartley College, Point Pedro, a leading educational institution in the Jaffna district, housing computer equipment estimated to be worth nearly Rs.4 million was completely destroyed by fire Saturday, school officials said. The school is located inside the High Security Zone around the harbor area in Point Pedro. Although the cause for the fire has been attributed to faulty wiring, sources said that due to the location of the school within the HSZ arson cannot be ruled out. (More)
  • Oct. 17, 2003: NE Provincial Level Science-Math Competition Held
    The North East Provincial Department of Education held the first provincial level Science-Mathematics Quiz Competition for Grade 11 year students who have excelled in zonal level competitions. The winners of twenty-four zonal level competitions participated at the provincial level competition held Wednesday in Trincomalee Sri Shanmuga Hindu Ladies College hall, sources said. Master Ratnaraja Rahulan of Hartley College in Point Pedro became the provincial champion. Master Renganathan Gokulnath of Puttur Sri Somaskanda College became second. (More)
